Title : Conservation Supervisor

Report to: Ecosystem Manager

Duty Station: Banda Aceh


One of AFEP’s sub-components is monitoring of wildlife and of the development in the Leuser Ecosystem (LE) with emphasis on conservation. This is done by mobile teams with AFEP staff and village residents combined. The teams need supervision and their reports need to be analysed and forwarded to local authorities in charge


Coordinate and supervise the Liaison and Supervision Officer (LSO), Aceh Tamiang Elephant Patrol Unit (ATEPU), Community Monitoring Teams (CMT ) and Mobile Patrol Unit (MPU) field staff, ensure that the tasks assigned to the teams are completed in time with quality. Prepare annual plans for the ATEPU, CMT and MPU teams and get them incorporated in the LIF budget Process the monthly activity plans in cooperation with the LSO, and get the necessary approvals in consultation with the Ecosystem Manager Process the monthly activity proposals for ATEPU, CMT and MPU and get the necessary approvals and ensure timely release of money Help maintain the financial discipline of ATEPU, CMT and MPU. Responsible to check all expenditure reported by the teams Coordinate with LSO in monitoring illegal activities in the LE based on information from LSO Liaise with Dinas Kehutanan, BKSDA, BPKEL and TNGL for monitoring illegal activities in the LE and the progress reports about the follow up actions initiated by various law enforcement agencies Maintain data base for all illegal activities reported by CMT and MPU. Obtain data from BPKEL, BKSDA, Dinas Kehutan and NGOs and compile as a comprehensive data base. Control and manage field staff in special projects monitoring wildlife, encroachment, negative impacts etc. Manage Unit at Aras Napal. Conduct training of the staff as required Maintain correspondence and files related with BKSDA, BTNGL, BPKEL and NGO’s connected with wildlife crime prevention Identify villages for community based monitoring of forests and develop network of informants for crime prevention Identify problem villages for illegal activities in the forests and prepare proposals for rehabilitation or other project support Responsible for Compilation of reports and sharing information with all stakeholders as instructed by managers Keep a record of laws and regulations that are important for the above

Desirable Qualification

a) Minimum a Bachelor’s degree or preferably higher degree in Forestry or Natural Resource management

b) At least 2 years of experience in rehabilitation and/or conservation.

c) Able to liaise and coordinate with the relevant government agencies

d) Experience in collaborating with communities in area development and in extension work

e) Fluent in English and Indonesian languages

Duration :

approximately 4 months (till 30 June 2010) with possible extension depending on the extension of AFEP
